Moving to a new country is an exciting adventure, but it can also be complex especially when it involves relocating beloved pets. If you’re planning to move your cats from the tropical paradise of Hawaii to Israel, this guide walks through what it’s like to fly with cats in the cabin on Delta Airlines, based on real experience.

Preparing for the Journey

International travel can be stressful for pets, so preparation is everything. Start with a visit to your veterinarian to ensure your cats are up to date on vaccinations and to obtain required travel documents, such as international health certificates and microchip verification.

Well before travel day, begin acclimating your cats to their carriers. Let them spend time inside at home and take short car rides so the carrier feels familiar rather than alarming. This small step makes a big difference on flight day.

Researching Delta Airlines’ Pet Policy

Before booking flights, review Delta Airlines’ in-cabin pet policy carefully. Delta allows cats to travel in the cabin under specific conditions, including carrier size requirements and limits on the number of pets per passenger and per flight.

Be aware that there are additional fees for in-cabin pets, and international destinations especially Israel have their own entry requirements. Always confirm the most current rules directly with Delta and the destination country’s authorities.

Choosing the Right Carrier

Selecting the right carrier is critical for both comfort and compliance. Delta has specific size and ventilation requirements for in-cabin carriers, and your cat must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Personally, I use Mr. Peanuts carriers, both the backpack and expandable versions. They’re sturdy, well-ventilated, and most importantly my cats couldn’t open the zippers, which had been an issue with other brands. A secure carrier provides peace of mind for a long international flight.

Making the Flight Reservation

Once you’ve confirmed Delta’s pet policy and chosen an approved carrier, book your flights as early as possible. Delta limits the number of in-cabin pets per flight, and pet spots are first come, first served.

Always notify the airline that you’ll be traveling with pets and confirm that your reservation includes them. Checking in early on travel day is strongly recommended in case pet spots become limited.

Preparing for Security and Comfort

On travel day, have everything organized and easily accessible. Your cats should wear secure harnesses with ID tags. Bring all required documentation, including:

  • International health certificates

  • Vaccination records

  • Israel import approval or entry documentation

Pack a small pet bag with essentials such as pee pads, wipes, food, a collapsible bowl, litter, and a small litter pan. I also brought disinfectant spray for quick cleanups. Avoid feeding your cats a large meal before the flight to reduce the risk of nausea.

Arrive at the airport early to allow extra time for check-in and TSA procedures. Delta requires pets to be removed from their carriers during security screening while the carriers go through the X-ray machine.

I requested a private screening, which allowed us to go into a secure room where I could safely remove the cats from their carriers while TSA screened the bags, food, and litter. This option greatly reduced stress and is worth requesting if you’re traveling with nervous pets.

During screening, keep your cats securely harnessed and held at all times.

Ensuring In-Flight Comfort

Once on board, place the carriers under the seat in front of you as required. During the flight, offer reassurance by speaking calmly and offering small amounts of water or treats when appropriate. Avoid opening the carrier during the flight, as this can be unsafe.

Your calm demeanour matters, pets often take cues from their humans. Staying composed helps them settle more easily.

Flying with cats from Hawaii to Israel as in-cabin passengers on Delta Airlines requires careful planning, patience, and attention to detail. By understanding airline policies, choosing the right carrier, and preparing thoroughly, you can make the journey far less stressful for both you and your pets.

Always confirm the latest requirements with Delta Airlines and Israeli authorities before travel. With the right preparation, this big move can be a smooth start to your next chapter—furry companions included.
