Nestled in the picturesque landscape of southwestern Germany, Ramstein is a town that perfectly balances small-town charm with significant cultural and historical importance. Known primarily for its proximity to Ramstein Air Base, the largest U.S. Air Force base outside the United States, Ramstein offers much more than its military associations. From rich history and vibrant community life to beautiful natural surroundings and delicious cuisine, Ramstein is a hidden gem worth exploring.

We made the trip to Ramstein for the DODEA European Championships for Soccer and Track and Field.  To learn more about DODEA Athletics you can check out their PDF from 2016.

The DODEA Soccer Euros is a highly anticipated annual event that brings together talented young athletes from Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) schools across Europe. This prestigious tournament showcases the exceptional soccer skills and sportsmanship of students representing various U.S. military bases and international communities. Held at state-of-the-art facilities, the competition fosters camaraderie and cultural exchange among participants while promoting physical fitness and team spirit. With intense matches, passionate supporters, and a vibrant atmosphere, the DODEA Soccer Euros not only highlights the athletic prowess of its players but also strengthens the bonds within the diverse DODEA community, creating memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

98% of the Division 2 games were played out in Richenbach-Steegen at their soccer complex.  It is a complex with ample parking and a great German Lunch tent.  One thing to note is there is NO POTABLE WATER at the field.  So you must bring all of your own team water.  The Championship game was played at the New Ramstein High School Stadium.  The field is much larger the the fields at the soccer complex so get your long range photo lens ready!

The DODEA Track and Field Euros is an elite annual event that draws the best young athletes from Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) schools across Europe. Qualifying for this prestigious competition is an arduous journey, demanding exceptional talent, dedication, and perseverance. Athletes must excel in rigorous regional meets and achieve top times or distances in their respective events to earn a coveted spot at Euros. The competition is fierce, with participants pushing their limits to meet stringent qualifying standards. Once at Euros, these athletes compete at the highest level, showcasing their skills in a variety of track and field events. The event not only highlights individual and team excellence but also embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among the diverse DODEA community.

All DODEA Europe schools have the opportunity to send a roster of 18 to Euros.  You can go  0-12 in the regular season or 12-0 and still make it to Germany.  The same does not hold true for Track and Field.  Our Track and Field team at AOSR only had 2 kids qualify for Germany.  I believe it is the first time they have ever made the Track and Field Euros.  The qualification requirements are not transparent or public soo we have to ask the DODEA Kabal who gets the nod.  Hardly seems fair between soccer and track and field requirements.

Track and Field Euros were held at the New Kaiserslautern High School Stadium.  Yes, this is also a brand new high school.  Our Kubasaki kids would be sick to see 2 new schools within 10 miles of each other compared to what they have to live with in Okinawa.

Ramstein’s central location makes it an excellent base for exploring the wider region. The charming city of Kaiserslautern is just a short drive away, offering additional cultural attractions, shopping, and dining options. For those interested in history, the cities of Trier and Heidelberg, with their ancient Roman ruins and stunning castles, are within easy reach.

From Rome we flew FCO to Frankfurt via Lufthansa Airlines.  I rented a car from Avis and drove 90 mins to the village of Rammstein.  For the first two nights I stayed at the Circle Hotel.  THis is a great hotel just outside the main gate to the Air Base with plenty of parking and a nice little breakfast included.  I was their first paypal using client ever!  Ha.  They only had 2 nights available so I checked in on Sunday night and had to check out on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday evening I checked into the Zollamt Design Hotel in Kaiserslautern.  This was a nice hotel and I had a reserved parking spot.  It is a little too deep into Kaiserslautern for me to stay here again if we return to Euros next year.  The owner was a lovely German woman and they have a proper espresso machine for my needy Italian friends.
